We answer your questions

Wine tourism is a form of tourism that focuses on the discovery of wine, its production methods and wine-growing regions. It combines visits to wineries, tastings, meetings with winemakers and sometimes wine workshops.

In France, wine tourism accounts for over 12 million visitors a year, 42% of whom are foreign. It is often practiced in historic wine-growing regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace or the Rhône Valley. UNESCO recognizes certain wine-growing landscapes, making them even more attractive.

Wine tourism offers a cultural, sensory and heritage experience based around wine. It encourages immersion in the terroir and promotes local know-how.

In Bordeaux, visitors can explore 57 appellations, enjoy 6,000 wine châteaux and taste renowned crus such as the Grands Crus Classés. Wine tourism also supports the local economy, generates jobs and promotes more educated and responsible wine consumption.

Bordeaux is France’s most visited wine-growing region, welcoming some 2.5 million wine tourists a year.

It is renowned for its blended red wines (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon), its Grands Crus Classés 1855, and for events such as Bordeaux Fête le Vin. The region is also home to the Cité du Vin, a 13,350 m² cultural venue dedicated to the world history of wine. Bordeaux is also one of the world’s largest wine-growing regions, with over 110,000 hectares of vines.

Emblematic villages include Saint-Émilion, known for its medieval heritage and UNESCO-listed monuments.

Pauillac is a Mecca of the Médoc, home to prestigious châteaux such as Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild. Pomerol, more discreet, is famous for its powerful wines, notably Château Pétrus. Sauternes attracts lovers of sweet wines, with properties such as Château d’Yquem.

Last but not least, Margaux is a must-see, with its exceptional terroir and fine wines.

The Saint-Émilion wine-growing area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 for its historical, cultural and agricultural value. This listing recognizes an area where vines have been cultivated continuously since Gallo-Roman times.

The site encompasses monastic architecture, troglodyte architecture and unique medieval urban planning. There are over 800 vineyards spread over 5,400 hectares. This living landscape reflects the harmony between nature, heritage and sustainable human activity, with a strong winegrowing identity.
